It’s anyone’s game on day three at the World Women’s

In a busy third day of action at the BKT Tires World Women’s Curling Championship 2024, Estonia recorded their first win so far, while four-times defending champions Switzerland pushed their undefeated run to 41 games.

Estonia played New Zealand in the afternoon, where the game was tied after ten ends. Estonia’s fourth player Erika Tuvike made a raise takeout to pick out the New Zealand counter and score three for a 10-7 win.

Afterwards, a delighted Estonian skip Liisa Turmann said, “I’m shaking, with all the emotions that I could have. It’s a good feeling to not finish with a ‘zero’, so let’s go from there. I think we really wanted that win; we knew we were capable of winning that.”

The Estonians came back on to face Denmark later, eventually just losing a tight game by 10-9 when Danish skip sealed victory on the last stone with an angle raise for three points.

Before this game the Danes had beaten Scotland by 9-2, and after that win skip Madeleine Dupont said, “Our team is playing well and we’re getting better and better.  A couple of months ago, I wasn’t even sure we’d be able to play, so I’m very happy with our position right now.”

41 game winning streak

Switzerland beat Türkiye by 8-7 in their morning game and came back onto the ice in the evening, to beat Japan by 10-3 – a 41st consecutive world championship win on the trot. These two wins push Switzerland into a clear top spot on five wins and no losses.

“It’s 41 in a row,” said fourth player Alina Paetz. “But we’re not worried about that record, we’re playing well but we’ve got a lot of tough teams coming up now.”

Canada and Italy undefeated

Meanwhile Canada’s 9-4 defeat of Norway and Italy’s 10-3 win over United States means that these two teams stay undefeated behind Switzerland, having played one game less.

Denmark sits behind these three undefeated teams with a won four, lost one record, followed by Korea on 3-1, who beat Japan by 9-4 in the afternoon session.

Sixth place log jam

Norway and Sweden both had wins on Monday – the Norwegians recovered from their loss to Canada with an 11-8 win over Turkiye, while Sweden beat Scotland by 8-1 after beating New Zealand by 8-2. These two teams now share joint sixth place with United States, on two wins and three losses.

Below these teams, Estonia, Japan, New Zealand, Scotland and Türkiye all still have just one victory, and will be keen to get more wins on the board to keep their play-off hopes alive.
