Late in the week it was Denmark's Johnny Frederiksen, who has never qualified for the playoffs in seven World appearances for his country, who sat at 6-2. Murdoch, a full-time curling athlete with government funding and four World championship titles for his nation – including European and World gold – was bogged down at 4-4.
But the Scots have rallied with four straight wins and will face perfect Thomas Ulsrud of Norway in Saturday's final. Ulsrud went 9-0 in the round-robin and handled the Danes in the "Page" playoff match earlier in the day.
"I thought that was like a Skins game in the first five ends," said Murdoch.
"It (the win) was very workmanlike. We put some pressure on them in six and seven and it paid off."
Murdoch earned silver last year in Basel, losing to the hometown Swiss on the final shot of the game.
"I don't quite like silver, actually," said Murdoch. "We're coming through strong, and Norway knows it."
Frederiksen put his week – capped off by his team's best-ever personal result – into perspective.
"The first few ends felt really good, it's just too bad we could score our two," said Frederiksen.
"At the end, it's very satisfying. In the six and seventh ends it's not much fun, when thinking about losing the game, but it really is satisfying to win a bronze medal."
The women's final, featuring Sweden and Scotland, is broadcast at 8:30 GMT on Saturday while the men's final is aired live at 12:00 GMT. Viewers can catch the action on Eurosport TV, and also vai webstreaming at Eurosport.com and CurlTV.com. |
