Tiebreakers in World Junior Men's play Print E-mail

OSTERSUND – A tiebreaker match is also necessary in men's play at the 2008 World Junior Curling Championships.

Switzerland's Manuel Ruch lost his fourth game in a row to Canada – by a 7-1 count in just seven ends – after starting the week with five wins. However, Ruch still gets a tiebreaker spot and will battle Norway – who defeated the Czech Republic 8-2 – to decide the fourth and final men's playoff berth.

Canada's William Dion finished the round-robin in first place overall, and will meet Sweden's Oskar Eriksson in the Page 1 versus 2 playoff game. The winner goes directly to Sunday's final.

Chris Plys of the United States beat Jialang Zang of China 10-6 to finish in third. The Americans will face the winner of the Switzerland/Norway tiebreaker in the Page 3 versus 4 playoff match.

Canada, Sweden and the U.S. all finished with 7-2 records.

"We didn't play anything exotic," said Dion, referring to his match against the struggling Swiss.

"The didn't play that well, I think. But in the fourth end he threw this massive peel weight, It was the biggest weight I've ever seen, I think."

Dion plans an aggressive approach to his playoff match against the hometown Swedes.

"We played a real good game against them in the round-robin," said Dion. "They're a great team and he's a great skip.

"We played aggressive against them and we will again. You have to play that way against them."

Sweden defeated Scotland's Glen Muirhead 7-3 and Germany's Daniel Neuner passed Denmark's Rasmus Stjerne 5-2 to close out the round-robin.

The men's tiebreaker will be played at 2:00pm CET, the same time as the women's tiebreaker featuring Canada and Denmark.

All tiebreaker and playoff matches will be webcasted by Curlingkanalen.se, with the semis and finals also webstreamed on Eurosport's Swedish channel (semis March 8 at 1400 CST and the finals March 9 at 930 and 1400 CST).
