The veterans from Füssen, who won world silver last year in Edmonton, watched French skip Thomas Dufour throw a wild takeout on his last stone for a desperate attempt for three points and the win. Dufour elected the more difficult shot as opposed to a more makeable shot for two and tie, but gassed the hit completely.
Germany, which controlled the game despite a brief French surge in the sixth end, stole a final point and won the match 8-5.
"It was not there, that shot," said Kapp. "Maybe for a Markku Uusipaavalniemi, who can hit one millimetre of it at full speed... the rock had to go sideways."
Kapp is delighted with his fast 3-0 start. One year ago, his squad started at 2-0 but quickly fell to 2-2. They finished the round-robin at 6-5 and won a pile of tiebreakers and playoff games to reach the final.
"Yeah, it's great for us," said Kapp.
"The way we are playing sometimes, it's a little bit unorthodox. We just came over on Tuesday because we all had to work. We don't get all the training some of these other teams get.
"But we like to have fun."
In other matches, China's Fengchun Wang earned his country's first ever international men's victory with a 7-5 win over struggling Switzerland, Australia's Hugh Millikin scored a 10-7 win over Denmark, and Canada's Kevin Martin moved to 2-0 with an 8-5 win over Sweden's Anders Kraupp.
Numerous television groups are delivering live and tape-delayed action, plus highlight packages, to world curling fans. Eurosport, CBC/Bold/CBCSports.ca (Canada), NBCOlympics.com and WCSN (United States) and CurlTV are all on site in Grand Forks.
