Age old foes: Canada and Scotland Print E-mail

GRAND FORKS – There were plenty of fascinating matchups in Monday's draw No. 8 of the 2008 World Men's Curling Championship.

But nothing gets a curling crowd more excited than a clash of the titans – Scotland versus Canada.

The birthplace of the sport, the mother club, versus the acknowledged global power, the colonials.

This time, it was Canada's Kevin Martin squaring off against his biggest threat of the championship, David Murdoch. And two of Murdoch's teammates – third Graeme Connal and second Peter Smith – played for Scotland in 1991, when their David Smith team defeated Martin for the world title.

"We've played against each other lots since then," said Martin, referencing his old foes.

"Peter and I, we get along great, back then and now. We had a lot of fun tonight. He's a really strong sweeper, and he was pointing that out to me during the game."

The Canadians won the match 6-5 to move to 5-0, while Scotland drops to 3-2. In other matches, Denmark's Johnny Frederiksen (2-2) stole the ninth and 10th ends to defeat the United States (3-2) by a 7-6 count, Australia's Hugh Milliken (2-3) won his second straight, 8-5 over the Czech Republic's Jiri Snitil (2-4) and Norway's Thomas Ulsrud moved to 3-2 with a 7-5 extra-end win over Sweden's Anders Kraupp (1-4).

Numerous television groups are delivering live and tape-delayed action, plus highlight packages, to world curling fans. Eurosport, CBC/Bold/CBCSports.ca (Canada), NBCOlympics.com and WCSN (United States) and CurlTV are all on site in Grand Forks.
