Turkey secure their Le Gruyère AOP European B-Division play-off place

Women

The B-Division women were back in action on Wednesday morning in their seventh round-robin session at the Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships 2018.

Turkey won 11-3 over Lithuania. Lithuania opened the scoring, but Turkey responded with a four-point score in the second end and increased their advantage from there. This sees them head the table on six victories to qualify for the semi-final alongside Norway who were also winners in this session. The Norwegian team took the lead over Hungary from the first end onwards and recorded a 10-3 win.

Estonia came out top in a close 7-6 game against Poland that went to an extra end. The lead changed during the game and it was the Estonian team that secured the final point.

England gained the upper hand over Slovakia. Three points in the last three ends played gave the English team the crucial advantage to secure a 6-2 victory.

Spain took a 6-5 win over Slovenia. Spain were leading 5-2 after the ninth end, but a three-point score for Slovenia took the game to an extra end where the Spanish team took the vital final point.

Men

The B-Division men returned to the ice later with games in the A and B group in their ninth round-robin session.

In the A Group, Czech Republic topped the table and qualified for the semi-finals with an 8-5 win over Spain. The Czech team opened the scoring and didn’t look back from there.

Estonia came out winners of their match against Hungary. Estonia took the lead after the second end and increased their advantage to bring a 9-2 victory home.

Latvia beat France 6-5. The game was level after the ninth end and it was the Latvian team that took a crucial single point to secure the win.

Slovakia took an 11-10 win over Turkey. Turkey were leading after nine ends, but a two-points score in the tenth end eventually gave Slovakia the edge.

In the only Group B game of the session, Israel came out top over England. Israel took seven points in the first two ends and hung on to the lead to nurse their advantage home for a 10-8 win.

Results

Women session seven: Turkey 11-3 Lithuania; Poland 6-7 Estonia; England 6-2 Slovakia; Norway 10-3 Hungary; Spain 6-5 Slovenia.

Men session nine:

Group A: Estonia 9-2 Hungary; Spain 5-8 Czech Republic; Latvia 6-5 France; Slovakia 11-10 Turkey

Group B: England 8-10 Israel
