Women

The B-Division women returned to the ice for their final round-robin session on Thursday morning at the Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships in Tallinn, Estonia.

Hosts Estonia won 6-5 against Spain to secure their spot in the semi-finals. Estonia opened the scoring and never allowed Spain to come back.

Lithuania also booked their ticket to the semi-finals with a 5-4 win over England. A single point score in the tenth end was crucial in handing Lithuania the victory.

Norway played Turkey in a close game that was level after the ninth end. The Norwegians took a vital point in the tenth end for a 7-6 win and head into the semi-finals as top of the table.

Hungary were also winners in this session with a 6-4 victory over Slovakia. Hungary opened the scoring with two points in the first end and didn’t look back from there.

Poland came out on top of their game against Slovenia. Slovenia scored four points in the second end to take the lead, but Poland responded to bring a 10-6 victory home.

In the semi-finals tomorrow, Estonia will face Turkey while Norway will play against Lithuania.

Slovakia and Slovenia meanwhile finished bottom of the table and will be relegated to the C-Division.

Men

The men’s B-Division were in action later for their final round-robin sessions with Group A games in the afternoon and Group B games in the evening.

In Group A, Estonia gave the local fans reason to cheer as an 8-6 win over France qualified them for the play-offs. Estonia were leading 8-3 after end six and held onto their advantage for the win.

Latvia also sealed their play-off place with an 11-8 victory over Slovakia. Slovakia had a four-points advantage after the fifth end, but Latvia gained the upper hand from there onwards.

A 9-2 win over Hungary secured Czech Republic the table lead heading into the semi-finals. Czech Republic levelled the game after the third end and left Hungary without a chance from there.

Turkey faced Spain with the latter coming out on top. The game started even, but from the fifth end onwards, Spain created an advantage they would hang on to for a 9-5 victory.

In Group B, Belarus secured a spot in the play-offs with a win over Lithuania. Belarus took the lead in the sixth end and went on to take a 6-4 victory.

England sealed top of the table with an 8-2 win over Denmark. England took the lead from the first end and never let go of their advantage. However, their four previous wins still booked Denmark a ticket to the play-offs.

Israel came out on top of their game against Slovenia. Israel opened the scoring in the second end and slowly built an advantage to bring an 8-3 win home.

Austria were 7-6 winners against Wales. A single-point score for Wales in the tenth end took the game to an extra end where the Austrian team took the crucial final point.

As heads of their respective tables, Czech Republic and England are straight through to the semi-finals. In the play-offs for the remaining semi-final spots, Estonia will play Denmark while Latvia will face Belarus.

Meanwhile, Turkey, France, Slovenia and Wales now play off to determine which two teams will be relegated to the C-Division.
