Women

The women’s B-Division was in action in Sunday morning’s second round-robin session at the Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships 2018.

Home crowd heroes Estonia took their first win of the tournament in an even match against Turkey that went to an extra end. The Estonians took the vital final point to bring home a 7-6 advantage.

A comfortable 8-2 win over Spain saw Norway record their second victory and take control of the table to put themselves in pole position for the World Qualification Event – the teams that finish first and second in the B-Division rankings will qualify for that new event.

Slovenia faced Hungary with the latter coming out on top. Five points in the last two ends were key for Hungary to take home a 10-7 win in a game that started fairly even.

A three-point score in the final end saw Lithuania edge out Slovakia to take a 7-6 victory in a close match.

Poland came out the winners of a low-scoring match against England. It took four ends until the English team finally broke the deadlock, but Poland was quick to respond and eventually recorded a 4-3 win.

Men

The men’s B-Division took to the ice later in ther day with Group A and B games in the round-robin stage.

Spain came out on top over hosts Estonia in Group A. Four points in the last three ends were crucial in securing the Spanish team an eventual 9-6 win and their second victory of the tournament. This result takes them to the top of the table on equal wins with Czech Republic who recovered from a three-point disadvantage in their match against Slovakia to emerge the eventual 7-6 winners.

In the extra end of a close match between Turkey and France, the Turkish team scored the decisive final point to win 7-6.

In Group B, Austria gained the upper hand over Israel to claim their second victory and top the table on two wins, alongside Wales. It took the Austrians five ends to take the lead, but they didn’t look back from there to win 8-4.

England faced Lithuania and after the teams being level at 6-6 after the sixth end, England went on to secure a 10-7 victory.
