Winter European Youth Olympic Festival returns curling to Turkey

International curling will return to Erzurum, in Turkey, when the 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) begins on Saturday (11 February), in the Erzurum Curling Arena.

The city is the largest of the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey and last hosted a curling event in 2012, when both the European Mixed Curling Championship and the European Curling Championships C-Division were held in the Erzurum Curling Arena.

The curling competition will comprise of a round robin, tie-breakers (if required) semi-finals and gold and bronze medal finals for both junior women’s and men’s teams.

The five junior women’s teams are Italy, Norway, Poland, Russia and hosts Turkey.

The six junior men’s teams are Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Slovenia and hosts Turkey.

The round robin begins at 15.00 on Monday 13 February and runs until 13.00 on Thursday 16 February. Tie-breakers will be held at 19.00 Thursday 16 February, if required, and the semi-finals for both junior women and junior men will take place at 09.00 on Friday 17 February.

The event concludes with the junior women’s and junior men’s bronze and gold medal games at 14.30 on Friday 17 February. All times are Eastern European time, two hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time

The Winter European Youth Olympic Festival represents the top events for young winter sport athletes between the ages of 14 and 18. These events are organised in two-year cycles, always in odd years, resulting from the initiative of the Association of European Olympic Committees (EOC). This edition of the winter festival features over 800 participants over nine sporting disciplines.

The nine sports in Winter European Youth Olympic Festival programme are alpine skiing, biathlon, cross country, snowboard, ski jumping, curling, ice hockey, short track and figure skating.
