2017 European Youth Olympic Festival Round robin stage draws to a close

The round robin stage of the 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival being held in Erzurum, Turkey has drawn to a close.

In the men’s competition Slovenia topped the group with a record of three wins and one loss. They began their competition with an 8-1 victory over Norway, before losing their next game to Russia by a score of 5-3. They bounced back immediately with a 6-3 victory over Netherlands before a final victory over hosts Turkey to secure their top spot and a place in the semi-finals.

Joining them in the semi-final stage will be Russia, Turkey and Netherlands, all with a record of two wins and two losses. Slovenia will face off against Netherlands, while Russia will play hosts Turkey.

In the women’s competition hosts Turkey topped the table with a record of three wins and one loss. They began their competition with a tough extra end 11-9 victory over Norway before losing to Poland in 7-6 when Poland would steal four points in the sixth end, then further steals of single points in the seventh and eighth ends for the close fought victory. A comfortable win against a second Turkey team and a close 6-4 win over Russia closed out their round robin stage.

Joining them in the semi-finals will be Russia with a record of three wins and one loss. Norway and Poland also join them in the semi-finals, both with records of two wins and two losses. Turkey will face Poland and Russia will play Norway.

All four semi-finals will take place Friday 17 February at 09.00. The winners of each semi-final game will progress to the gold medal game while the losers will compete for the bronze medals. All medal games will take place later that afternoon at 14.30.
