Russia win double gold at 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival

Russia took the gold medals in both the men and women’s competitions at the 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival being held in Erzurum Curling Hall in Erzurum, Turkey.

In the men’s final Russia defeated Netherlands by a score of 5-3 after seven ends. The victory was largely helped by scores of two points in the second and fourth ends to give Russia a 4-1 lead going into the break giving Russia the gold medals, with Netherlands picking up the silver medals.

Russia’s men’s team are skipped by German Doronin, along with third Sergei Maksimov, second Kirill Postnov, lead Dimitry Sirotkin and alternate Georgii Epremian.

In the bronze medal game Slovenia defeated hosts Turkey 6-3. Slovenia would open the scoring with two points in the first end then steal three points in the third end on their way to their victory.

Earlier in the day Russia defeated Turkey 3-2 and Netherlands defeated Slovenia 4-2 in the semi-finals.

In the women’s competition Russia claimed the gold medals after defeating Turkey by a score of 7-2.

Russia are skipped by Irina Nozovtseva, with third Nadezhda Beliakova, second Arina Piantina, lead Anastasiia Mishchenko and alternate Mariia Ermeichuk.

Turkey would open the scoring with a single point in the first end, before Russia responded with a score of two points in the second end to take a lead they would maintain for the remainder of the game. Steals of a single point in the fourth end and three points in the fifth end were enough to seal the victory giving Russia the gold medals and Turkey the silver medals.

In the bronze medal game Poland defeated Norway 5-3 sealing their win with a steal of a single point in the eighth and final end after both teams traded single points with the hammer throughout the rest of the game.

Earlier in the day Russia defeated Norway 10-5 while Turkey defeated Poland 7-6 to claim their places in the gold medal game.
