Ford World Women’s Curling Championship 2012 starts Saturday

The Ford World Women’s Curling Championship 2012, presented by Richardson, begins in Canada on Saturday March 17 and runs until Sunday March 25. Twelve of the top women’s curling teams in the world will compete at the event which is being staged at the recently-upgraded Enmax Centre in Lethbridge, Alberta.

World Juniors 2012 - Sportsmanship Awardees

Jocelyn Peterman skip of the Canadian junior women’s team and Sander Rølvåg lead on the Norwegian junior men’s team have won the 2012 World Curling Federation World Junior Sportsmanship Awards. Peterman and Rølvåg were selected for the award by fellow players at this year’s World Junior Curling Championships in Östersund, Sweden.

After leading the pack all the way through the week, Canada’s junior men’s team took the 2012 world junior title with an almost faultless performance in the final, beating Sweden by 10-4, effectively in seven ends, although with the result beyond doubt, the teams threw stones through in the eighth to complete the necessary number of ends.

It took all the way to an extra end of a tense final, but Scotland eventually successfully defended the women’s World junior title on Sunday morning, beating the Czech Republic by 6-5 to take gold. Beside them, Russia ran Sweden out of stones in the tenth end, to win their game by 7-4 and take bronze for the second year in succession.

Oxana Slesarenko named IPC Athlete of the Month

Oxana Slesarenko, member of Russia’s Wheelchair Curling team, which won gold at the 2012 World Championships in Korea, has been voted the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athlete of the Month for February after leading her squad to the 2012 World Championship title in Chuncheon, Korea.
