International curling will return to the Gangneung Curling Centre in 2018, where the recent PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games curling event was held, for the Pacific-Asia Curling Championships 2018.

As part of the Olympic legacy, the curling ice, used for the Olympics and Paralympics, will remain in place for at least a year after the Games, and this announcement is a major milestone for that legacy and for sustaining interest in the sport in South Korea.

The event, for women’s and men’s teams and, which qualifies the gold and silver medallists to the World Curling Championships, will run from 3 to 10 November.

World Curling Federation President, Kate Caithness, said: “The Olympic Winter Games curling event captured the imagination of the South Korean public, particularly with Team EunJung Kim, a.k.a. ‘The Garlic Girls’ winning a historic first silver medal.

“Having the Pacific-Asia event return to Korea and for the championships to take place in the Olympic venue in Gangneung will certainly excite the participating teams and also support the new interest of curling in South Korea.

“Also, with both Korea’s men’s and women’s teams defending their Pacific-Asia championship titles this will no doubt make for a wonderful event and continue the growth of the sport.”

The Pacific-Asia Curling Championships are held annually in November and qualify teams for the World Curling Championships the following year in March and April.

From these championships two women’s teams – the gold and silver medallists – will qualify for the World Women’s Curling Championship 2019 in Silkeborg, Denmark (16-24 March). The top two men’s teams will secure places at the World Men’s Curling Championship 2019 in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada (30 March-7 April).

Also, new for this season, the teams that finish in third and fourth place, will gain entry to the World Qualification Event to be played in January 2019. This hands those teams a second opportunity to gain qualification to the World Curling Championships. The location for the World Qualification Event is not yet known.

The Mayor of Gangneung, Choi Myeong Hee, welcomed this announcement saying: "We are so pleased to have the Pacific-Asia area's national curling teams here in the Gangneung Curling Centre – the venue of 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

“With our passion, enthusiasm and Olympic related experience, we will put all our efforts into to making this event a successful collaboration with the WCF. In Gangneung all participants will enjoy beautiful nature and abundant cultural resource, convenient transportation, better accommodation and conveniences we already showed to the world during the Olympic period.

“We are looking forward to having an opportunity to entertain all the participants soon."
