The last day of round robin play on Sunday will be crucial as Scotland, currently on six wins and one loss, plays China, then Canada. Norway (on a record of 5-3) has one game left against Germany. Russia and China, with four wins and three losses each, face eachother. Russia will also play Sweden.

“When you come to the world championships your first goal is to get the business end of the week,” said Scottish Skip Aileen Neilson after winning their only game on Saturday 5-4 against Korea. “The way the team have been playing with another two games to go, we are hopefully still in the running for that, once we get there we take stock and focus and start the competition again.”

In the other games on Saturday, Canada picked up another two wins 13-0 against Germany, then 7-4 against Norway. After breaking their winning streak, the Norwegians handed a second win to home side the Czech Republic when skip Rune Lorentsen missed a bold attempt at a double take out with his last stone.

Lorentsen was upbeat after the game saying “with two beginners and our third player who has never been in the worlds before, our performance this week is above all our expectations.”

China won their only game of the day against Sweden 5-3. At the other end of the standings the battle is on to avoid relegation to the World Wheelchair Championship qualifying event next November in Finland. Two teams will drop down to the qualifier.

The USA was buoyed by a win against Korea in the morning 12-3. Their game in the afternoon against Russia went to an extra end and the final draw by US Skip Augusto Perez stopped short of the house and gave the Russians a 9-7 win.

The final day of round robin play is on Sunday with playoffs on Monday and medal games on Tuesday.
