WWCC Day 6 - Player Reaction

Draw 17

Scotland

Following their win against Canada, Scotland Skip, Eve Muirhead, said:

"It’s always extra-special to beat Canada in Canada, especially after a tough week, but I’m not going to lie, I’m totally gutted. I know we’ve just come off a win but we’re capable of medalling here and it didn’t come off this year.

"We struggled with the ice at the start of the week and we just didn’t get on top of things that we had to get on top of.

"We were getting better and better and if I’d made that draw against Sweden, who knows where we could have been.

"We’re a young team, our average age is 21 and to play in a Championship like this and get a lot of pressure from the media – it’s tough. It’s been great for us. Even though we haven’t qualified, all in all it’s been a huge learning curve and hopefully we can do bigger and better things.

"Each competition has been a stepping stone for us. We’ve had a great season – European champions, but it’s going to be hard to keep it up, but we know what we’re capable of as a team and hopefully we’ll get some good performances in the future."

Canada

Following their loss to Scotland, Canada Skip, Heather Nedohin, said:

“I wouldn’t be concerned at all. Have you ever seen the hungry Canadians? We’re feisty, we’ll be back tomorrow.

“I would say that the skip didn’t show up today and I’ll be there tomorrow.

“I don’t know what the scenario is, I just know that at least we’re in the hunt. I’m not going to rely on others to position us in or out, I think that’s what I’m going to hold onto right now. But what I’m going to say is that tomorrow I’m going to have a better day.

“I know I need to show up. If anyone needs to play well it’s the person throwing the last shots and I take full responsibility for today. I think my performance was low, and that’s not what you get out of me. I’m very surprised of two games back to back, so you know what, I’m happy because it doesn’t happen to me and tomorrow I look forward to playing.

“I don’t think we’re that slow. We’ve had some opponents that have played really well with us, against us they put some pressure shots on us. But more than anything I’m going to emphasise that I’m going to play better tomorrow.”

Draw 16

Korea

Following their win against Russia, Korea Skip, Ji-Sun Kim, said:

“It’s the first time South Korea have reached the play-offs, it’s very exciting - unbelievable. We’re very nervous. Today we lost once, against Switzerland, next game I don’t think I was any good. But, I wanted to win so much so mentally I was better prepared and now I’m very happy.

“It is very difficult to go to play-off so Korea see we are a team and now they see we are very good. I want to go to Sochi Olympics, then we will get ready for 2018.”

Draw 15

Italy

After defeating Canada, Italy Skip, Diana Gaspari, said:

“It was hard to come back today on the ice because we lost all games in the last ends yesterday, so it was a bad day for us. But we met this morning and said ‘this is our last day and we need to show that Italy can play even if on the board we are only on two wins. We were tired but in the end we were able to do it.

“Of course each win counts towards Olympic points. Our aim is to end up in the first 10 which will be a good position for us. We still get to win the last win because we want to get the Olympic points, so the pressure is still definitely there.

“The problem for us is that we don’t play many games together throughout the year. As you can see here, the first days we played not so good, then game after game we were getting better. So if we could have more games during the season we could be better from the beginning. For us it would be great if we could start the round-robin right now.”

Switzerland

Switzerland Skip, Mirjam Ott said: We had quite a lot of pressure, it was an important game for us. In the first and middle part of the game, we played good, we held the game close and we got through. We had some misses, perhaps some problem skipping the ice, but we fought back and that’s the most important point. “We play Russia in the last game so another important game for us, it’s not yet finished. We first have to beat Russia and we will be fine. That’s a good situation to be in.”
