Denmark and Great Britain to play for Youth Olympic gold

Following the semi-final games at the Gangneung Curling Centre, Denmark will face Great Britain for Youth Olympic gold, while China will play Switzerland for bronze.

The final will take place at 18:00, with the bronze match at 14:30 today (25 January).

China versus Denmark

China opened with a hit for two in the first end for an early lead. This was followed by two perfect draws to the button by Danish skip Jacob Schmidt. In the Another two for Denmark came in the fourth end with a draw to the four-foot, to take a 4-3 lead.

A strong fifth end by the Danes left China with a double for a single point, but they removed just one stone, giving Denmark a steal for a 5-3 lead.

Denmark blanked the seventh end to retain the last stone in the eighth end, leading 5-4. After China attempted a raise takeout on their final shot, Denmark was left sitting one, and won the game 6-4.

“We felt we were in control most of the match,” admitted Denmark skip Jacob Schmidt. “Not so much at the start, but at the second half we really stepped our game up and played well.”

“It feels amazing [to play for gold], it’s way over our achievement and I just want to win the next game,” said Denmark’s vice-skip Katrine Schmidt.

Switzerland against Great Britain

Great Britain skip Logan Carson made an open hit for three in the first end. Switzerland followed this by a nice hit for a single.

After two points by Great Britain in the third end, Switzerland had an opportunity to draw for two points but came up just light, settling for one to go down, 5-2.

In the fifth end, Great Britain could see a tiny piece of the Swiss stone, attempting for a multiple score, but flashed everything, scoring a single for a 6-2 lead.

Switzerland turned on their offence in the sixth end, putting up two corner guards and looping stones around. Swiss skip Nathan Dryburgh was left with a hit for three, closing the gap, 6-5.

In the seventh end, Great Britain produced a score of two with a controlled draw to the four-foot for two, and a 8-5 advantage playing the eighth end.

Switzerland were left with a tricky double takeout for three to tie, but just missed and scored a single for an 8-6 final.

“It’s a great result and I thought we were in control for all the game,” said Great Britain skip Logan Carson.

“It’s definitely a great feeling [to play for Great Britain’s first Youth Olympic curling medal] I feel like I’m confident we can win the game and hopefully we come back with gold.”
